Improving Transparency in County Finances

I am very happy to announce that after two years of requesting the Financial & Administrative (F&A) Committee record their meetings, this week F&A finally voted in favor of televising these meetings, providing more opportunity for citizen involvement.  As you may know, one of my priorities as your County Board representative is to improve government transparency.  You should be able to access information, in the most open manner possible, so you know how your taxpayer dollars are spent.

The County has a $350 MILLION Operating Budget, and most of these expenditures are authorized by F&A.  While anyone can access the monthly County Board meetings, the real conversation and analysis occurs at the committee level.  You deserve the opportunity to see that discussion without taking a day off work to travel to Waukegan to attend the committee in person.  I want to thank County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor (District 18), Steve Mandel (District 11), Mike Rummel (District 12), Nick Sauer (District 17), and Craig Taylor (District 19) for their support of this important change.

The next Financial and Administrative Committee meeting is scheduled for August 3 at 1:00 pm.  On October 18 and 19 you can watch as we go over the proposed budget for the 2017 fiscal year.  You can always stream LCTV Live from your computer at or you can select a program on the County's website.  If you have AT&T, you can watch LCTV on Channel 99.  The Local Access channel for Comcast customers varies by location.

In a continuing effort to improve accessibility and transparency, I have held open office hours, community meetings  on Lake County Government and Forest Preserve budgets and programs, and sessions on how to appeal your property assessments.  If there is something that you would like to learn more about, please don’t hesitate to contact me with your ideas.
